Although no imminent danger from a large asteroid has been identified, the agency emphasizes the importance of preparedness, considering the destructive potential of past impacts.
A key element of NASA’s plan is the deployment of advanced telescopes to improve the detection of NEOs. These telescopes will help scientists spot smaller asteroids that could be difficult to detect using current technology. In addition, NASA is working on spacecraft designed to intercept and deflect these objects. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, which successfully altered the trajectory of a small asteroid in 2022, serves as a proof of concept for deflection strategies.
