Srinagar: In a significant move, the Jammu & Kashmir Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has passed a resolution urging the restoration of Statehood to the Union Territory. This comes as a direct response to the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status.

The resolution was adopted during the first Cabinet meeting chaired by the newly elected Chief Minister on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Mr. Abdullah and his five Ministers.

However, the Opposition parties have criticized the move, claiming that the resolution has deviated from the "goalpost of Article 370." They argue that the resolution should have specifically demanded the reinstatement of Article 370, rather than merely calling for the restoration of Statehood.

The resolution is expected to be presented to the Union government as a formal request for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. The outcome of this move remains uncertain, as the decision ultimately lies with the Central government.
