Ratan Naval Tata, one of the most admired industrialists in India, was born on December 28, 1937, into one of the country’s most prominent families. Yet, despite his illustrious lineage, Ratan Tata’s journey to the helm of Tata Group was not without challenges. Raised by his grandmother after his parents’ separation, young Ratan had a somewhat unconventional childhood.

After completing his schooling in Mumbai and Shimla, Tata went on to study architecture at Cornell University. Later, he enrolled in an Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, a move that prepared him for the leadership responsibilities that lay ahead. However, unlike many who join their family business at the top, Ratan Tata began his career working on the shop floors of Tata Steel, learning the nuts and bolts of the business firsthand. His early years in the family business were not glamorous but instead focused on hard work, learning the intricacies of the operations, and understanding the workforce.

By 1991, after years of steady growth and accumulating knowledge, Ratan Tata was appointed the chairman of Tata Group, succeeding J.R.D. Tata. At the time, Tata Group was a highly decentralized and domestic-focused conglomerate, consisting of more than 100 companies. Ratan Tata’s leadership over the next two decades would transform Tata Group into a global giant, focusing on modernization, consolidation, and innovation. His boldness and vision would redefine the group’s global strategy and turn Tata into an internationally recognized brand.
